Formerly a director of Flemings, executive deputy chairman of Misys and non-executive director of AXA UK plc. He is chairman of Tribal Group plc and non-executive director of British Empire Securities and General Trust plc and Kleinwort Benson Private Bank Limited. He was appointed a director in March 2003, senior independent director in September 2004 and the chairman in June 2008.  He is chairman of the Nomination and Governance Committee.  Aged 59.

Has spent some 30 years as a director of Caledonia Investments plc. He was appointed its chief executive in 1987 and became chairman in 1994. He is a non-executive director of Bristow Group Inc.
